Last time he played in a big league he was 1 in 4.
Payet was 28 when we signed him, Gomez is 31. I'm not looking for a sell on fee, I just don't want the club lumbered with a striker on a huge contract who I don't think will offer that much especially when he's 32/33.

By the way, none of the strikers we are looking at or anyone else is looking at are actually "better' than Gomez. None of their records suggests that and even on current stats Gomez is still firmly a 1 in 2 striker. He's even better than bacca.

Re: Get Mario Gomez....now

In modern football 31 is not old, especially for strikers. It may be old if you want a sell on fee but not old in actually doing a job.
We may prefer pace in terms of stretching teams and playing on the break but pace is no substitute for class. There are tons of pacy headless chickens running around in the prem (Gayle at palace etc...) but scoring goals is actually a skill. People like Gomez simply score more of the chances they get and age doesn't change that fact dramatically.
We finished 7th because amongst other things are strikers can't finish very well. Gomez would solve that problem pretty easily.
Im just not into buying young players for the sake of it. If we had that mentality we wouldn't have bought payet. Sounds very Spurs like , worrying about sell on fees and age... It's not right.

I don't think he's shit i'd just prefer someone a bit more mobile. Scarred from watching Carlton Cole and Andy Carroll lumbering about for years.

What other German strikers missed out on the squad?
Eerie
I know they're his career stats but I don't see the relevance in showing a players goal scoring record from 10 years ago. He's not a top player now hence why he's at the viola/ besiktas. He's 31 in clear decline in his career and we should be looking at younger better strikers

I know you're a bit tick, but they were his career stats.
He's only just turned 31, scored 26 goals last season, and would be purchased current best striker. Would allow us to bullet Valencia and Sakho, and being credit to spend big on someone else.

Not sure, getting on isn't he and easier to score in the Turkish league. Would prefer Bacca if he comes. Just hope we don't end up with Zaza.

Some of the comments on here are laughable. Gomez would be an excellent acquisition to the front line and give us the depth of a target man up front when the inevitable injuries come. He is a finisher still as he showed in the Euros. You don't get in the German squad if you are not decent.
I agree we still need a pacy and athletic front man so we can play different ways and not become predictable.
If he wants to come to the Premier League then I'm sure plenty of teams would offer him a good deal or there is the inevitable Chinese deal no doubt which could net him millions more than we would pay.

Was a great player no doubt but now..mmmm not so sure, anyhow haven't we got a big target man already!!
i think we need to be targeting players in their prime & pay the dough or quality emerging younger talents who are scoring goals now (Yedder etc) rather than the old West ham policy of buying past their sell by date stars!!

Referring to stats from 2003??
He was a good player, not so much anymore.
Averaged 10 goals a season for the last 3 years. Only going to get worse. We play a high tempo game and need a mobile forward to press.
Gomez is not the answer.

Gomez is an excellent striker.
We'd be fucking idiots if we have a chance to sign him and turn him down.

Here's a montage of all his goals for Besiktas last season, a couple of them laid on by Tore:

He is a terrific striker - would be a big upgrade on Carroll. He's surprisingly mobile for such a big bloke and scores goals from in and all around the box. Get him in. I don't know whether the fact that he played with Tore last season would make him more or less likely to want to join West Ham.

Some people are clueless suggesting Gomez is shit.
He's rammed home goals wherever he's been, his link up play is fucking incredible. He's the German Teddy Sheringham - only better. I'd wet my fucking fanny to see him in Stratford.
